Here is John and Ringo ("du jour") during their shoot for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. (1967)

Title Song Lyrics
It begins with:

"It was twenty years ago today
Sgt. Pepper taught the band to play"

I've read where some people take just the first line and apply it to Aleister Crowley. The "twenty years ago today" part has something to do with when he died? But what about the second line? Who IS Sgt. Pepper, and how could he have taught them to play when they weren't a band yet?

And very, VERY telling are the two lines that say,
"So may I introduce to you
The act you've known for all these years"

To me that says they were just then in 1967 showing the world their true colors. Like larkspur said elsewhere, they were always Sgt. Pepper's, but they got their foot in the door and endeared themselves to us by being the "Beatles" first, the band every teenager and young adult loved and adored.

I've always wondered why the "Lonely Hearts Club" part of the name is there, what is that about? It sounds like an auto-suggestion to be depressed (one of the goals to overcome us with?).

Ringo is introduced on this album as Billy Shears as he begins to sing A Little Help From My Friends.

Then in his song called "I Am The Greatest", he resumes the Billy Shears persona.

Example:

I was in the greatest show on Earth,
For what it was worth.
Now I'm only thirty-two;
And all I wanna do, is boogaloo!

Yes, my name is Billy Shears,
You know it has been for so many years.
Now I'm only thirty-two;
And all I wanna do, is boogaloo for ever!
